Dispelling the 3 Main Fears Associated With Hypnosis And Self-Hypnosis

I’ve been getting many questions from my readers wondering if all this talk about hypnosis is actually legit. There is certainly a buzz going around right now about all the benefits of hypnosis and all the great things that hypnosis and self-hypnosis supposedly can do.

Supposedly. Possibly. But ...

But what are the risks and dangers with hypnosis? There’s lots of uncertainty and fear surrounding hypnosis ... and more specifically ... self-hypnosis.

Some of the fears and questions I’ve been hearing are: 

  • “I’m not sure that hypnosis is safe!” 
  • “Is it going to cause me to lose control? 
  • “Am I going to be ‘under the power’ of the hypnotherapist?“ 
  • “Am I going to get lost in a trance and not be able to come out?” 
Movies and stage shows have done a great job at creating these fears ... but in reality, nothing could be father from the truth.

So let’s address these fears:

1.  Is hypnosis safe? 
Yes - hypnosis is perfectly safe. Here's the scoop: the American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association have approved hypnotherapy for use by professionally responsible individuals. The British Medical Association adopted hypnosis as a viable therapeutic tool in 1958.

2. Am I going to lose control and be ‘under the power’ of the hypnotherapist?
No - you will not lose control. You won't do anything in a hypnotic state that you would not find acceptable in your normal awake state.

In clinical hypnosis, you will be aware of what is going on and you will find you actually feel you have more control over yourself. The hypnosis is simply increasing your ability to communicate with yourself.

Self-hypnosis teaches you to go into this state willfully, under your own control, where you can make amazing changes from within.

3.  Am I going to get lost in a hypnotic trace? 
No you will not get lost in the trance. You are fully able to come out when you’re ready.

Actually, you go into hypnotic trances every day ... naturally ... and come out naturally. For example, when you drive a long distance, you may find that miles and time seem to evaporate, and suddenly you're at your destination. Or you may get wrapped up in a project at work, and suddenly realize that you should have been somewhere an hour ago.

While under hypnosis you have greater awareness than when you are fully awake and you retain all the power to select what you want to say or do. You are fully in control. You can come out of the trance whenever you decide that you’re ready.

So I ask you this ... Now that we understand that the common fears associated with hypnosis are in fact just fears and not reality, what are you going to be about it? What if it just might work for you?

Hypnosis can be used to successfully reduce pain and anxiety, to overcome fears and phobias, to aid in weight control and smoking cessation, to address particular medical issues, and in various other ways.

Can Hypnosis Really Help With Weight Loss? That’s CRAZY!

I use to think that hypnosis was for stage shows. It was used to make people bark like dogs, jump on one foot while spinning around, and lots of other crazy things. This is called stage hypnosis and while it may be entertaining, I’ve learned there’s so much more that hypnosis can do.

I learned that not all hypnosis is this crazy. There’s another kind of hypnosis that can actually be used to help people.

A few years ago I was introduced to this other kind of hypnosis called Medical Hypnosis. I’ve since learned what hypnosis is able to do, and I’m amazed! Hypnosis can help with everything from anxiety to migraines to insomnia, and from phobias to quitting smoking to pain management.

I’ve personally used hypnosis to:

  • give birth to my children completely naturally and pain-free, 
  • keep my family in perfect health and survive cold & flu season,

  • and I even used hypnosis to reduce my breasts after breast feeding my 3 kids!

Hypnosis for weight loss has been clinically studied and proven to work, without a shadow of a doubt.

This shows that hypnosis works even better over time (Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 1996).

  • Stradling J, Roberts D, Wilson A, Lovelock F. Controlled trial of hypnotherapy for weight loss in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea. International Journal of Obesity Related Metababolic Disorders. 1998 Mar;22(3):278-81. 

So is hypnosis crazy? Well ... I guess it depends on what you’re using it for.  It’s pretty crazy and comical if you’re using stage hypnosis to quack like a duck ... but if you truly want to lose weight, medical hypnosis is an amazing, PROVEN way to help you get the pounds off. So I'd say no ... medical hypnosis is not crazy.

Life, Chocolates, Chinese Buffets, and Weight Loss!

I’ve always believed that Forrest Gump had it wrong. “Life is like a box of chocolates.” He’d say. “You never know what you’re gonna get!” Forrest Gump is a classic movie and I loved it. I thought Tom Hanks was brilliant. I just really didn’t like the philosophy.

What kind of life is that? You never know what you’re gonna get!

I much prefer to think of life as a chinese buffet! Pick and choose what you want! Want more of something? Go back for seconds! Don’t like something? Push it to the side of your plate and get something else.

And then there’s dessert! All the dessert you can eat! YUM!!

A chinese food buffet! That’s a much better way to think of you life ... don’t you agree? You truly can pick and choose what you want out of life ... or don’t want!

However ... buffets are not such a good thing if you’re trying to lose weight. There’s way too much choice, and it’s far too tempting to overeat.

Today Is A Great Day To Be Happy!

It’s a grey, gloomy Thursday here in Southern Ontario ... but I’m not letting that get me down! I want to BE HAPPY!

The problem with diets is that it’s so easy to make excuses.
  • “I’m going out with friends tonight.  I’ll go back on my diet tomorrow!”
